Former national team player Simon Rolfes believes in digitalization in soccer. Rolfes focuses on “Made in Germany” technology: “Aachen is the Silicon Valley of Europe".
Aachen/Eschweiler, 08.21.2017 – Simon Rolfes and his business partner, Dr. Markus Elsässer, have expanded their activities in the area of goal-line technology: Just in time for the 2017/18 soccer season, GoalControl GmbH was in July taken over by the entrepreneurs from Eschweiler with their company S. Rolfes & M. Elsässer Technology GmbH . “Goal-line technology" is already established in the top leagues and interest has also grown in the smaller leagues. GoalControl is one of two companies worldwide that offers this technology and is licensed by world soccer’s governing body FIFA.
“We believe in digitalization in soccer, it will become increasingly important,” said Rolfes. The 35 year old former national team player, who had already acquired shares in GoalControl GmbH in May 2016, attaches great importance to high-performance technology “Made in Germany”: “Aachen is a very interesting engineering location, in a way it is the Silicon Valley of Europe."
French League relies on GoalControl
The GoalControl system has been successfully used in France’s Ligue 1 since the 2015/16 season. “We have taken another big step forward with the system in recent months. We have worked intensively on camera technology and the speed of data transmission. GoalControl indicates to the referee on his watch in real time whether the ball was in the goal or not,” said Rolfes, who pursues ambitious goals: “We have a top product that we are constantly developing further. It is, of course, our goal to become the market leader and also bring GoalControl to the Bundesliga." Daniel Marchwinski, Managing Director of GoalControl is also delighted with the takeover: “I see great opportunities for growth on an international level and in other sports.”
